Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a Mexican holiday, the origins of which date back hundreds of years to the indigenous Aztec festival dedicated to the goddess Mictecacihuatl. The holiday focuses on gatherings to honor family and friends who have died by building private altars called Ofrendas, using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed. Originally the festival was in August but the modern festival takes place on 31 October, 1 & 2 November and ties in with All hallow tide: All Hallows' Eve, Hallowmas, and All Souls' Day - Halloween as we know it here in the UK.
